What is counselling?

Being unhappy from time to time - whether on one’s own or in a relationship - is a vital part of human experience. It is neither unusual nor a sign that anything is essentially ‘wrong’; it can be a useful and appropriate reaction to change or a passing crisis. However, being unhappy for ‘no reason’ or for long periods is neither useful nor necessary. Here counselling can be a useful option.

Each counsellor may have his or her own explanation as to what counselling is.  This is mine: Counselling allows a person to explore their emotions and perceptions in a supportive atmosphere.  It seeks to help and heal where previously there will have been unease, pain or confusion.  It’s a collaborative, open and honest process with an explicit goal of helping a person achieve a happier, more balanced way of living by enabling and encouraging change where needed.

About Counselling

My approach

There are no offices, white coats or analyst couches.  We sit together in a quiet, airy and comfortable room in the privacy of my home.  I have studied and practised a wide range of counselling techniques but I am a fundamentalist in none.  My approach is ‘integrative’ which means that over many years I have learned to adapt and apply those ideas and methods that I have found to be useful and that work in practice.

For those with some knowledge of this field, my style is influenced by the Humanist, Existentialist and Person-Centred schools of psychology (Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow, Irving Yalom amongst others). I work with the client from a position of experience and compassion to guide their understanding of what is troubling them and in doing so help them find their own solutions.

My style is jargon-free, relaxed but focused, clear but not confrontational.  I balance seriousness with the healing power of finding warmth and humour in the everyday troubles and traumas of our, sometimes messy, lives.

I counsel individuals and couples.  After the initial low cost, no obligation consultation, I offer further sessions by mutual agreement (see more details here>>).
